What is an Observer Corps?

The US system of government is based on the premise that it is accountable to the people, that people have a right to know what their government is doing. Today there are federal, state and some local laws -- “sunshine” laws -- that give the public access to government meetings and government records (with some exceptions), thereby promoting government transparency and accountability. The League of Women Voters has been an active champion of openness in government throughout its history.

LWVNOW’s Observer Corps is a structured way for citizens to exercise their right to know what governmental bodies are doing and how they are operate. League members volunteer to attend government meetings and report back to the League, and to the community when warranted, helping to ensure that the public is aware of the decisions that impact them.

Any current League member is invited to become an Observer. Non-members already attending government meetings are invited to join the League and the Observer Corps! For more information, send an email to information@lwvnow.org
