The Science and Policy Debate of How Groundwater Pumping is Drying Lakes, Streams, and Wetlands

  • Portage County Public Library, Pinery Room 1001 MainStreet Stevens Point, WI (map)

This free presentation will explore how groundwater and surface water are connected. When groundwater is pumped by high capacity wells, stream flows and the levels of lakes, wetlands, and streams decline; a little pumping causes small declines while large pumping amounts cause large declines. How much lakes and streams should be depleted by high capacity well pumping is an area of debate in the water-rich states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Dr. Kraft is a Professor Emeritus of Water Resources and former Director of the Center for Watershed Science and Education with the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and University of Wisconsin – Extension.  This meeting is co-hosted by LWV Stevens Point Area and LWV Upper Mississippi River Region.
